Attracting Talent: Recruitment and Incentives

This section offers an overview of various strategies and incentives for attracting and recruiting researchs to institutions.

Open recruitment process and high visibility: EURAXESS Hosting offers and EURAXESS Jobs

EURAXESS Jobs is a platform dedicated to connecting researchers with job opportunities, fellowships, and funding in research and innovation across Europe and globally. It lists thousands of vacancies from universities, research institutions, and businesses, including positions funded by EU programs like Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and the European Research Council (ERC). Employers can post job offers for free, gaining access to international talent, while researchers can search for positions tailored to their expertise and career stage.

EURAXESS hosting offers are opportunities provided by research institutions, universities, or organizations across Europe to host researchers, often fully funded by EU programmess like the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships. These offers allow researchers to collaborate with host organizations on specific projects, typically for up to two years, without financial costs to the hosting institution. The EURAXESS portal facilitates the posting and searching of hosting offers, enabling institutions to connect with talented researchers globally and fostering international collaboration.

Available Funding Schemes

It is imperative for institutions to establish robust national or institutional frameworks tailored to PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, while simultaneously fostering long-term career development opportunities.

For instance, Horizon Europe is the European Union's flagship funding program for research and innovation, offering financial support across three pillars: Excellent Science, Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness, and Innovative Europe. Within this framework, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) provide funding for researcher mobility and training, while ERA Fellowships support researchers from widening countries to enhance their careers in advanced institutions. The European Research Council (ERC) grants fund groundbreaking, high-risk research projects led by individual researchers, fostering scientific excellence across disciplines. Additionally, JRC Joint Doctorates are collaborative doctoral programmess hosted by the Joint Research Centre, focusing on interdisciplinary research.

Institutions and incentives for attracting research talents

Incentives for attracting research talents identified in the Survey on initiatives to address the negative effects of brain drain

The aim of this survey was to provide an inventory of national, local and regional initiatives among the EURAXESS Network members (EURAXESS National Organizations, EURAXESS Centres), related to  transforming brain drain to brain circulation and/or favoring brain gain at the national, local and/or regional levels.

Best practice attraction initiatives

Below, you can seek inspiration from the examples of the initives identified by the survey:

Matchmaking and Global Mentoring Events

This section deals with matchmaking and networking events as well as global mentoring events.

Regional Collaborations Fostering Institutional Promotion

Research institutions can significantly enhance their visibility. Fostering international networks, engaging stakeholders effectively, promoting strategic areas of expertise, and utilizing robust communication strategies are essential steps toward achieving this goal.

For example, research institutions seeking to enhance their visibility can draw valuable insights from successful initiatives like Bizkaia Talent, the South Moravian Centre for International Mobility, and the DRESDEN Concept that could serve as an inspiration for others in the academic and research landscape.
