Temporary residence for the purpose of family reunion

 

Family members of a third country national wishing to join him/her in Slovakia for a period longer than 90 days have to apply for a temporary residence for the purpose of family reunion. In accordance with the current regulations, following persons are seen as family members of a third country national:

  • spouse if both spouses are at least 18 years old
  • common single child of the third country national and his/her spouse younger than 18 years of age
  • his/her single child younger than 18 years of age
  • single child of his/her spouse younger than 18 years of age
  • his/her dependent single child older than 18 years of age or dependent single child of his/her spouse older than 18 years of age who cannot take care of him/herself due to the long-term unfavourable health condition
  • his/her parent or a parent of his/her spouse who is dependent on his/her care and lacks appropriate family support in the country of origin.

 

Applicants have to apply in person at the Slovak at the embassy/consulate competent for their country or at a competent foreign police office in Slovakia.

The application may be submitted at the competent Foreign Police Department only if the applicant is:

  • granted an EU residence permit,
  • granted a tolerated residence,
  • holder of a national visa
  • a third country national who does not need a visa to enter Slovakia
  • Slovak living abroad

 

Applicants have to submit a complete application with all the required documents; otherwise, it will not be accepted. If the embassy or the police department does not accept your application, they will notify you in writing of the documents you need to enclose so that it can be accepted. Once the temporary residence is granted, the police department will send you a written notice, stating the effective and expiry date.

 

Temporary residence for the purpose of employment may be renewed for a maximum period 5 years.

The application for renewal of temporary residence must be submitted in person on the official form at the competent Foreign Police Department no later than the last day of validity period of the current temporary residence. The temporary residence is considered legal (only) in the territory of the Slovak Republic until the decision on its renewal is made. 

It is required that the purpose for which the temporary residence permit has been grated still lasts.

The applicant has to submit:

  • completed form Application for the renewal of temporary residence
  • Valid passport
  • One colour photograph (3 x 3,5 cm)
  • Affidavit stating that the reasons of the temporary residence permit for the purpose of family reunification still last
  • Document on health insurance
  • Document on proving common accommodation with warrantor for at least 6 months of the temporary residence; in case of a shorter stay it is necessary to provide a proof of accommodation for the whole stay, e. g.
    • a confirmation from the accommodation provider,
    • a rental agreement with notarised signatures,
    • an affidavit on the provision of accommodation (with a notarized signature)
  • Document on financial coverage of residence (An affidavit of the warrantor that he/she will provide the applicant with financial and material coverage – notary certified + his/her employment contract, salary statement or bank account statement). 
  • NOTE: financial coverage shall be of at least the subsistence minimum for every month of stay. Until 30.6.2020 the subsistence minimum is 210,20 EUR/month, the subsistence minimum is always adjusted on 1 July of the current calendar year.

The foreign police department shall make a decision on your application within 90 days from the date of submission.
