Union Health Insurance Fund and Dôvera Health Insurance Fund have announced plans to merge into a single health insurance provider operating under the Dôvera brand. Although, the share purchase agreement was signed on July 14 2026, it will only become effective after obtaining the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities and meeting all required conditions.
For international researchers and their family members insured with Union Health Insurance Fund, the most important message is that there are currently no changes to their health insurance coverage or services.
Your insurance remains fully valid, including:
- your health insurance card,
- access to your current doctors and contracted healthcare providers,
- approved medical treatments and spa care,
- reimbursement requests that have already been submitted,
- existing benefits,
- the Union mobile application, and
- payment details for your health insurance contributions.
There is also no need to inform your doctor or employer, as all arrangements remain unchanged during the current stage of the merger process.
What Happens Next?
According to both insurers, the planned merger aims to combine the strongest services and benefits offered by each health insurance fund, providing clients with a broader range of services while further improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare. Both insurers have stated that clients will be informed well in advance about any future changes as the merger process progresses.
Can You Choose Another Health Insurance Fund?
Yes. Individuals who do not wish to become insured with Dôvera after the merger, may choose another public health insurance provider. Applications to change a health insurance fund for coverage effective from 1 January 2027 must be submitted by 30 September 2026, in accordance with Slovak legislation. If no change is requested, Union policyholders will automatically become insured with Dôvera once the merger has been completed.
The announced transaction concerns only Union Health Insurance Fund. Union Insurance Company, which provides commercial life and non-life insurance, will continue operating in Slovakia.
