A job for your spouse

 

If your spouse accompanies you during your study or research stay in Slovakia and he/she wants to work in Slovakia, the process of employment is different for EU/EEA/Swiss nationals and nationals from third countries.

Nationals of EU/EEA Member States and Switzerland are employed under the same conditions as Slovak nationals. They must fulfil the employer's requirements, e.g. required education, language skills or required working experience in a specific professional area, etc.

Third country nationals who have been granted a temporary residence for the purpose of family reunification can be employed in Slovakia without obtaining a work permit.

A work permit or the confirmation of the possibility to fill a vacant position is not required in case of:

  • a family member of a researcher with a Hosting Agreement, who has been granted a temporary residence for the purpose of family reunification, right after being granted the temporary residence;
  • a family member of an EU Blue Card holder, who has been granted a temporary residence for the purpose of family reunification, right after being granted the temporary residence;
  • other family members, after 12 months from the start of continual stay in Slovakia after being granting the temporary residence


In case a work permit or a confirmation of the possibility to fill a vacant position are not required, the employees can be employed, not only in an employment relationship, but also upon agreements on work performed outside employment relationship (e.g. work performance agreement, agreement on part‑time job of students, agreement on work activity).

In case the family member does not fall under the categories with easier employment conditions and a work permit is required, this third country national can be employed only in the employment relationship. The labour office can grant a work permit to a person with a temporary residence for the purpose of family reunification until the expiration of a 12 months period after being granted the temporary residence. After the initial 12 months the work permit is not required anymore.
