Residence Permit

According to the Act 404/2011 on Stay of Aliens, permit for temporary stay for the purposes of carrying out research and development is not required, if the stay of the alien (third country national) on the territory of the Slovak Republic does not exceed 90 days in one half-year. If the stay exceeds the 90 day period, the alien shall submit the application for granting permit for temporary stay.

Responsible authority is the Bureau of Border and Aliens Police.

It si possible to apply for the residence permit from abroad at the respective embassy or, aliens legally staying on the territory of the Slovak Republic may apply for the granting of a permit for temporary stay also at the appropriate Foreign Police Office in the Slovak Republic.

There is no application fee required for the temporary residence permit for the purpose of research and development. Administration fee of € 4,50 alien pays for issuing the residence when he is granted the temporary residence permit. Documents requested are:

  • Filled in application form;
  • Valid passport;
  • 2 identical color pictures (3x3,5 cm);
  • Hosting agreement not older than 90 days;
  • Documents not older than 90 days confirming clear criminal registry of the alien:

-  extract from the criminal registry of the State of his/her nationality and
-  extract from the criminal registry of the State in which he/she resided for the last three years;

  • Document proving sufficient financial means not older than 90 days (on the level of minimum resources for each month of residence, which is now €189,83). The document proving financial means is considered:

-  a statement of personal account in the name of an alien held in a financial institution,
-  the confirmation of the statutory authority of the legal person of financial and material security of the alien during his stay;
-  in case of an alien having long-term residence in a EEA-country, document confirming the long-term residence.

Researchers are not required to submit document confirming their accommodation arrangements.

All documents submitted with the application must not be older than 90 days. Each foreign document must be sufficiently authenticated (either by an apostillation or a consular superlegalization) and must be translated into Slovak by an official translator certified by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic.

Regarding the time span of the application process, in the case of an alien applying for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of research and development it is decided on the application for the granting of a permit for temporary stay within 30 days following the receipt of the application at the Foreign Police Office in the Slovak Republic.

Within 30 days of being granted the temporary residence permit or after the entry to Slovakia, it is necessary to submit a proof of health insurance in Slovakia and a medical certificate proving that the foreign national does not suffer from any infectious disease which might endanger public health.
